Alcohol
Alcohol-Related Incidents
While there has been a decrease in alcohol-related incidents (DUI arrests, hospitalizations, motor vehicle accidents) from 2011 - 2020, alcohol does continue to remain a significant public health concern in United States. Alcohol consumption is recognized as a significant contributor to preventable deaths. In Los Angeles County, from 2010 - 2020, there were a total of 126,012 motor vehicle collisions that involved alcohol, resulting in 72,980 injuries and 2,300 fatalities.
Consequences of Underage Drinking
There are various short-term and long-term harmful affects associated with youth alcohol use. Some of them include:
Brain Development: Alcohol can negatively impact the developing brain of adolescents.
Impaired Judgement and Decision-Making: Can lead to risky behaviors, accidents, or injuries.
Increased Risk of Addiction: Youth who start drinking at an early age are more susceptible to addiction.
Legal Consequences: Underage drinking is illegal, and engaging alcohol-related activities can lead to legal consequences, including fines, legal charges, and community service.
Long-Term Health Effects: Chronic alcohol use from a young age can lead to long-term health problems, such as liver disease and cardiovascular issues.

Our Efforts
Project Sticker Shock
Project Sticker Shock" is a community-driven initiative aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of underage drinking and driving under the influence (DUI) by placing warning stickers on alcoholic beverage products in local alcohol outlets. Through partnerships with businesses and youth/parent groups, the project seeks to deter underage drinking and DUI's, and promote responsible alcohol consumption. As of 2024, CoPALM has partnered with 15 local outlets to distribute 2,500 warning stickers.
Coaster Campaign
The "Coaster Campaign" is an initiative that aims to raise awareness of the risks associated with binge drinking and driving under the influence by sharing materials with prevention messages to customers of local bars and restaurants. Materials are shared before major holidays associated with increased rates of alcohol use. As of 2024, CoPALM has partnered with 60 bars and restaurants to distribute 7,100 coasters with prevention message.
Alcohol Delivery Project Initiative
Alcohol Delivery Project is an initiative that partners with local liquor stores to prevent youth access to alcohol via delivery services. The liquor stores are given a roll of these stickers, which they place on delivery orders. The delivery driver then scans the sticker upon delivery to confirm that they checked IDs from the recipients.
